As mentioned in Chapter 6, the Persians, under Cyrus the Great (ruling 560-530 B.C.E.), conquered the Lydian Empire of Croesus (ruling 560-546 B.C.E.) and subjugated the Ionian Greek city-states (already under Lydian domination), where they installed tyrants loyal to Persia. By the time of Cleisthenes’ reforms, the Persian monarch Darius I (ruling c. 522-486 B.C.E.) controlled a vast empire stretching from Ionia to India and into Egypt, millions of subjects, and unimaginable wealth and resources.

Labyrinths

The Persians (people from the area of modern Iran) were not Semitic or Arabic peoples. Their origin and language is Indo-European. This means that they have an ancient ancestry with the Irish and East Indians (not the Iraqis).
